Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods

Chocolate covered pretzel rods

Chocolate covered pretzel rods are the easiest sweet treat to make. You will love the sweet and salty combination. Make them festive for any season or holiday with your topping choices.

I was given chocolate covered pretzels as part of a gift package during the holidays. Between my kids and I, they were gone within a day. This was a treat I hadn’t eaten in a long time and I forgot how much I love the combination of the salty pretzel rods and the sweet chocolate. When they were devoured so quickly by my whole family, I made a mental note to make this salty sweet treat at home in the very near future.

So here you go – the easiest chocolate covered pretzel rods recipe ever!

Tools You’ll Need

How to Make Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods

If you are using several different kinds of chocolate, place each in a microwave-safe bowl. Glass or ceramic bowls are best. Semi-sweet chocolate chips in one bowl, white candy melts in another and dark chocolate chips in another.

My recommendation is to melt only one type of chocolate and prepare the chocolate dipped pretzels with that type of chocolate and toppings before melting the other types of chocolates. You don’t want the other bowls of chocolate to harden while you are working.

Place 1/4 teaspoon of coconut oil in each bowl. This will thin the chocolate mixture a bit and make it easier to spread on the pretzel rods.

Melt chocolate one bowl at a time in 30-second intervals, stirring each time with a rubber spatula. Microwave twice at 30-second increments, stirring after each time. After, microwave in 15 second increments until the chocolate is melted. It’s important to do this process slowly so the chocolate doesn’t burn.

You can also use the double boiler method but the easiest way to melt the chocolate in the microwave. Life is complicated enough, why overcomplicate this simple recipe?

While the chocolate melts, prepare your sheet pan by placing parchment paper on each pan.

Dip the pretzel sticks into the melted chocolate and spread the chocolate down the pretzel with a spoon or rubber spatula. Push the excess chocolate back into the bowl with the spatula. You really only need a thin chocolate layer. Let the excess drip off the end of the pretzel.

Place each chocolate dipped pretzel rod on your prepared baking sheet and top with your choice of sprinkles. Let sit at room temperature until the chocolate hardens and the candy coating or sprinkles set.

How to Store Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods

Store the chocolate pretzel rods in a glass airtight container once the chocolate is completely hardened.

These also make a great gift. You can package them in cellophane bags (see note below) and give them to friends and family or include on cookie trays during the holidays. They are the perfect treat for the Christmas season or any holiday like Valentine’s Day, Easter or 4th of July.

They can also be made for birthday parties or baby showers. Just change up the way you decorate them. You can use colored, festive holiday sprinkles of any kind.

A Note about Cellophane

There is a difference between true cellophane and what is marketed and called cellophane in the United States. Most of the cellophane that you buy in the United States contains polypropylene. Polypropylene is a chemical that generates concerns about its safety when used as food packaging. I personally try to avoid using plastic storage for my food as much as possible. Further, polypropylene is not biodegradable and therefore not eco-friendly.

If you are making these chocolate covered pretzel rods as a gift and want to buy eco-friendly, health conscious packaging, I encourage you to consider all your options and read the ingredient labels for any cellophane packaging that you are considering to purchase.

If you would like to purchase true cellophane packaging that does not contain polypropylene, you can consider packaging from Elevate Packaging. Check it out here.

Kid Hacks

None needed for this recipe. Just be sure to get some for yourself before they are all gone! These are so much fun and such an easy treat. These chocolate pretzels will not be around long!

Tips

You will need approximately 2 cups of chocolate chips for one bag of prezel rods. This recipe makes about 30 chocolate covered pretzels. I used 1 cup of dark chocolate chips, 1/2 cup of milk chocolate chips and 1/2 cup of white chocolate chips to make a variety.

Use 1/4 teaspoon for every 1 cup of chocolate chips to thin the chocolate for easy spreading.

Be sure to microwave slowly and stir in between. I used 30-second increments for the first two times then 15-second increments thereafter until melted.

Only melt one kind of chocolate at a time and then prepare that kind of pretzel so it doesn’t harden.

Sprinkle the toppings while the chocolate is still wet and not yet set.
