These delectable Cream Cheese and Shrimp Wonton appetizers are the perfect appetizer for your next gathering.

I make this appetizer every year for a family Christmas gathering. I have a bunch of the coolest nieces on the planet who are all avid foodies. Each year for our holiday celeboration, I spend hours and hours in the kitchen preparing food for my family, with a focus on my foodie nieces. I typically prepare a “small plate” type of spread of foods that allows grazing all evening instead of a sit-down meal. My nieces sit around my big kitchen island trying everything, oohing and aahing all evening while I get to chit chat with them. It’s one of my very favorite things all year long.

My nieces have always lovingly dubbed these Cream Cheese and Shrimp Wonton Appetizer as Shrimp Krispies. From the time they were very young, when I would ask them for a list of the foods they wanted me to prepare for our family holiday celebration, they would all unanimously reply, “Shrimp Krispies”!

The cream cheese filling can be prepared ahead of time and and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator until it’s time to assemble these easy cream cheese wontons. Making the filling ahead of time allows for a very simple process once your guests arrive.

If you are taking the cream cheese wonton appetizer to a party, you can prepare them all the way up to the step of baking them, and then take the assembled wontons to your party and pop them in the oven at your host’s house. This rangoon style appetizer definitely needs to be served warm.

This cream cheese wonton recipe is also a great game day appetizer. I hope you enjoy this great recipe for one of my favorite appetizers.

Brushing with cold water accomplishes a few goals – 1 – It helps the wontons stay closed, 2- it helps the sesame seeds stick to the top before baking and 3 – it crisps the edges of the wonton wrappers while baking, making these crispy cream cheese wontons AAAMAZING!

Tips

You can find the wonton wrappers in the produce section of most grocery stores. They are typically located in the prepared section of the produce aisle near the cold salsas, guacamoles, etc.

If you don’t find them there, they might also be in the dairy aisle near the cheeses or other prepared foods.

They will always be in a refrigerated section of the store.

Kid Hacks

If your kids do not like seafood, mix all of the cream cheese filling ingredients except for the shrimp. Separate out a portion of the cream cheese mixture before adding the shrimp.

Make some of the creamy wontons excluding the shrimp for the kiddos. They will love the creamy filling and the crispy wontons! The best part – you will be introducing them to some new Asian-style flavors with the sesame oil, mirin, rice wine vinegar and sesame seeds.

This is such a great way to introduce kids to new flavors over time and expand their food choices and preferences in a simplified way.
